Bromo, A Place You Must Visit When You’re in East Java

Bromo is a beautiful place that you should put on your travel bucket list once you’re in Indonesia. It is located in Probolinggo, East Java. I will provide you a bit information that might be helpful for you. I will make it into a list, things that you should know when you want to visit Bromo.

What you can enjoy

When you are in Bromo, the thing that you want to see is the gorgeous sunrise. It’s beautiful and you will feel warmth after the cold weather all night in Bromo. The view of the sunset is worth it and you will be happy to capture it all the times. Ha Ha Ha… or maybe that is only me who did that…

You can walk or rent a jeep to take you to the top where you can see the beautiful sunrise. There are many places there where you can rent the jeep. Even you can bring your own car to Bromo. I did walking to the place where I could see the sunrise.

Where to stay

There are hundreds accommodation in Bromo area, so you don’t need to worry about that. Try to stay in the place where you can have great view of Bromo and hot water. Ha Ha Ha… Mine was called Wisma Yog Bromo Homestay.

What to see in Bromo

Bromo Mountain: You will see the great and beautiful mountain even you can visit it very close. You can rent motorbike about $15 or $35 jeep to take you seeing Bromo closer. I was thinking to rent motorbike and I did riding by myself, but the location is about sand…!!!!!!! So, I decided to rent a motorbike with the driver. Ha Ha Ha… I didn’t want to put myself in trouble by falling from the bike many times there. It was so much fun and challenging by riding the motorbike.

Temple: You will also see the temple where people pray there. It’s the same with Bali, people in Bromo has Hindu as their religion. They will have some ceremonies also around the mountain and temple sometimes. It was unique and interesting to see this part of multi culture in East Java.

Riding horse: If you want to walk until the stairs to hike Bromo, that would be fine but if you want to ride a horse that would be more interesting thing that you can do in Bromo. You can rent the horse from the people around the temple there. It’s only less than $10 to rent the horse.

Crater: When you are on top of the Bromo, you will see the crater which is still active. It has strong smell, so if you don’t really like it, you should bring a mask.

Dolls from plants: You will see people are selling a doll made from flowers or plants. You can buy it about $2-5. The people said, you can throw the doll for worshiping the mountain guardian. Actually, I didn’t believe it but I did it. πŸ˜€

How to get there

Well, I was solo traveler from Jogja. So, in the morning I went by train which takes 4-5 hours to Gubeng, Surabaya Train Station about $12. Then I took a taxi to take me to Bus terminal called Purabaya about $4. I took the bus because I wanted to try Purabaya Terminal. I took a bus to Probolinggo about 3-4 hours from Surabaya. It’s about $2 to take the bus with AC. I arrived in Probolinggo Bus Terminal about 4 O’clock in the afternoon. Lucky, that I still got the mini car or shuttle bus that could take me to Bromo. The Bus terminal is close to the mini car or shuttle bus rental. They’re usually waiting for some people to go about 5-6 people. I was the last person to complete the group. Then I arrived in Bromo about an hour, I asked the driver to drop me to a homestay that my local friend recommend it to me. Actually, you can take train to Probolinggo Train Station if you want or package tour from Jogja.

What to eat in Bromo

Don’t worry about food, because there are many places where you can choose. But, mostly they’re Indonesian traditional food so if you are looking for western food, it’s a bit difficult. If I’m not mistaken, the restaurant that I visited is the famous one with many people there. They have a wide selection for food, it’s called Cafe Lava.

For going back to Jogja, I took the mini car or shuttle bus to Probolinggo Bus Terminal, then I took taxi to take me to the Djuanda Airport, Surabaya. Ha Ha Ha… I was a bit lazy to take the train because I was too tired after doing Bromo Marathon. It’s annual event in Bromo.
