Edan-Edanan Dance For Avoiding Disaster And Misfortune

Edan-Edanan is part of wedding ceremonies in Yogyakarta. There are many ceremonies in traditional wedding and Edan-Edanan Dance is used to sweep out misfortune. The dancers in the traditional costumes and clown makeup are the symbol of spirit. The brides invited them to protect the brides and their household from any bad luck.

This is the unique part of the traditional wedding ceremony that I love. It is good entertainment also for the guests in the wedding party. Here are photos from my friends who did edan-edanan dance in some wedding ceremonies.

Entertaining

Edan-edanan means (being crazy) it is from Javanese language Edan (crazy). That is why the dancers in the performance were dancing like they’re crazy. If I’m not mistaken crazy people is considered as people who doesn’t have any sin. They can be very brave and don’t care with bad things happened around them. If people do bad things toward them, they will get angry and fight it. But I’m still looking for the exactly meaning why the people call it edan-edan and the relation between being crazy and avoiding misfortune.
